Travel Hack No 1 – Set Your Currency to Local and Use Multi-Currency Travel Cards

The first travel hack falls under the category: how to save money while traveling. To make travel more sustainable for my wallet, I play around with currencies. The most convenient way to pay is in your own currency. You not only save on exchange rate fees, but you also know exactly how much you’re paying. However, some booking sites mark-up exchange rates in foreign currencies. Therefore, you can get better prices if you set the currency to the local currency of the website.

Now, how to avoid exchange fees while traveling with your home credit card? I recommend looking for Neobanks like Revolut, Wise, or N26. These travel hacks ensure you save money on the go. They let you hold different currencies and offer much better exchange rates than your home bank. They also allow you to withdraw money from ATMs and track your spending in their apps.

Besides currency exchange hacks for travelers and budgeting functionalities, they offer crucial security features. As these banks are app-based, you can easily freeze your cards if you lose them or they get stolen. Another benefit is that they’re top-up cards, which make managing your budget easier and limit your exposure if the cards get stolen. For frequent travelers and digital nomads, these travel hacks and cards are essential. I have used Revolut since 2014 and Wise for the last two years.
