New York City - NY - USA
New York City, often referred to as the "Big Apple," is a global metropolis pulsating with energy, diversity, and endless possibilities. Founded as a Dutch trading post in the early 17th century, New York City has grown into one of the world's most influential cities, shaping trends in finance, culture, and the arts.
The city's skyline is dominated by iconic skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center, symbols of its ambition and resilience. Central Park, a sprawling oasis in the heart of Manhattan, offers a retreat from the urban hustle, while Times Square dazzles visitors with its neon lights and bustling crowds.
The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, stands as a beacon of freedom and welcomes millions of visitors to its shores each year. Other must-see attractions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Broadway theaters, and the High Line, a unique elevated park built on a former railway.
If you´re like me and you love photography here some spots you should not miss. Brooklyn Bridge Park gives you a great view of the skyline and is also perfect for night shots. Hunter’s Point & Long Island City are great if you want to take photos of the Mid-town skyline with the Chrysler building and the UN campus. One of the most unique places is Calvery Cemetery in Queens. You have this great setback of the skyline with the cemetery. Flushing Meadows Corona Park (with the Unisphere) and Coney Island are perfect if you want to get a bit out of town and see some nature.
If you are into musicals, but couldn’t get a ticket for a broadway show (of they’re to expensive for you), check out Ellen’s Star Dust Diner. The waiters are all aspiring performers and deliver a great show with the good food and beers.
If you come from Boston, Philadeplhia or Washington D.C. the easiest and best way to get to NYC is by train, especially with the Acela which is one of the only high-speed trains in North America.
And as this website is dedicated to travel photography, I have to mention B&H 420 9th Avenue. Especially if you’re a photographer yourself, you’ll this place.
The best time to visit New York City is during the spring months of April to June or the fall months of September to November when the weather is mild, and the city comes alive with outdoor activities and cultural events. Avoiding the peak tourist season in July and August can help you enjoy the city with fewer crowds and better deals on accommodations.
With its rich history, diverse neighborhoods, and endless array of attractions, New York City promises an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking excitement, culture, and adventure.
